Car
If you are traveling by car, start from any major city in Terai, such as Biratnagar or Janakpur. Drive towards the Mechi Highway (also known as the Eastern Highway) and head east. Follow the signs to Taplejung. The journey will take approximately 10-12 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. Once you reach Taplejung, follow the signs leading to Lelep. The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area is located a short distance from Lelep. Ensure you have a reliable GPS or a map, as the roads can be challenging in some areas.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a bus from any major city in Terai, such as Biratnagar or Janakpur, to Taplejung. Buses to Taplejung are available from various terminals; ensure you check the schedule in advance. The bus journey may take around 12-15 hours. Once you arrive in Taplejung, you can hire a local jeep or taxi to take you to Lelep. The cost of the jeep ride will vary, but expect to pay around NPR 2000-3000. From Lelep, you can start your trek into the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area.
Trekking/Walking
After reaching Lelep, you will need to trek into the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. Make sure to hire a local guide if you are unfamiliar with the area. The trek can take several days depending on your final destination within the conservation area. Prepare for rugged terrain and varying weather conditions. It is advisable to carry sufficient food, water, and camping gear. Obtain any necessary permits for trekking in the conservation area at the local office in Taplejung.
