Car
If you're driving to Ruby Dome, start from Elko, Nevada. Head south on US-93 for approximately 50 miles until you reach the town of Wells. From Wells, take NV-231 west towards the Ruby Mountains. Continue on NV-231 until you reach the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge. There, you can park your car at the designated parking area. From the parking area, you will need to hike approximately 4 miles along the Ruby Crest Trail to reach Ruby Dome. Make sure to bring hiking gear and sufficient water.
Public Transportation + Hiking
There is limited public transportation to the Ruby Mountains. The closest public transit is from Elko, where you can take a bus to Wells. From Wells, you will need to arrange for a taxi or ride-sharing service to take you to the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Once at the refuge, park your vehicle at the designated area and hike approximately 4 miles via Ruby Crest Trail to reach Ruby Dome. Be prepared for outdoor conditions and plan your return trip accordingly, as public transportation is not frequent in this area.
Hiking
Once you arrive at the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge, the hiking trail to Ruby Dome is well-marked. Follow the Ruby Crest Trail, which is a moderately challenging hike. Be prepared for changes in elevation and varying terrain. The trail can take anywhere from 3 to 5 hours to reach the summit depending on your pace.
