Car
To reach Upi Bay by car from any location in Maré, start by heading towards the main road, Route de Maré. If you're in the central village area, look for signs directing you to the south. Drive along Route de Maré for approximately 10 km until you reach the fork in the road. Take the left fork, which leads you towards Upi Bay. Continue on this road for about 5 km, and you will see signs for Upi Bay on your right. There is a small parking area available near the bay.
Public Transportation
If you prefer to use public transportation, look for local minibus services that operate around Maré. You can catch a minibus from central Maré that is heading towards Upi Bay. The fare is typically around 300 XPF (New Caledonian francs) per person. The journey may take about 30-40 minutes depending on stops. Inform the driver that you wish to disembark at Upi Bay, and they will drop you off at the nearest point to the bay, from where you may have to walk a short distance to the water.
Bike
For the more adventurous, consider renting a bike in Maré and cycling to Upi Bay. Start from the village center and take Route de Maré, following the same directions as for cars. The ride is approximately 15 km and offers beautiful views of the island. Make sure to bring water and wear appropriate gear, as some parts of the road may be uneven. The bike rental cost is generally around 1,500 XPF for a half-day rental.
