Getting There

• Car

  If you're driving to Valles Caldera National Preserve, start by heading south on NM-4 from Los Alamos. Continue on NM-4 for approximately 20 miles until you reach the entrance to the preserve. Look for the Valles Caldera National Preserve sign. Once inside, follow the main road and look for parking areas near the visitor center, which is a good starting point for your visit.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Valles Caldera via public transportation, take the Blue Bus from Los Alamos to the nearest stop at the intersection of NM-4 and County Road 29. From there, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to cover the remaining 8 miles to the preserve entrance, as public transport does not go directly into the preserve. Be sure to check the Blue Bus schedule in advance, as services may be limited.

• Bicycle

  If you're feeling adventurous, you can bike to Valles Caldera from surrounding areas. Starting from the town of Jemez Springs, head north on NM-4 for about 12 miles. This route can be steep and challenging, so ensure you are prepared with the right gear and plenty of water. There are designated bike lanes in some sections, but be cautious of traffic.

• Hiking

  For those already in the vicinity and looking to hike into Valles Caldera, you can access the preserve via the numerous trails that start from nearby public lands. Ensure you have a map or GPS device, as trails can vary in difficulty. It is recommended to check for trail conditions and any necessary permits before heading out.
