Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you're driving, start from Lake Placid. Head south on NY-73 for about 12 miles until you reach the town of Keene. In Keene, look for the signs directing you to the Big Slide Mountain trailhead. You will take a right onto the 'Big Slide Mountain Road' (also known as 'Route 73'). The trailhead parking area is located approximately 1.5 miles down this road on the left. Note that there may be a parking fee, which is typically around $10 per day.
Public Transportation
If you're using public transportation, take a bus from Lake Placid to Keene. The 'Adirondack Trailways' bus service operates routes that connect these towns. Once in Keene, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to the Big Slide Mountain trailhead, as public transport does not go directly there. Expect to pay around $15-$25 for a taxi ride from the bus stop to the trailhead.
Hiking
If you have parked your car at the trailhead, the hike to Big Slide Mountain begins at the trailhead parking lot. The trail is approximately 2.7 miles one way and offers a moderately challenging hike with beautiful views along the way. Make sure to wear appropriate hiking gear and carry enough water and snacks for the hike.
