Summit Splendor: The Majestic Porter Mountain

Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving, head to Keene, NY. From Route 73, take the exit toward Keene and continue on NY-73 W for about 8 miles. Once in Keene, look for signs to Porter Mountain, which is located approximately 5 miles from the main road. The trailhead parking area is located at the end of a dirt road called 'Porter Mountain Road'. Note that this road can be rough, so be prepared for a bumpy ride. Parking is free but limited, so arrive early during peak seasons.

• Public Transportation

  If you're using public transportation, take a bus from nearby towns such as Lake Placid or Saranac Lake to Keene. The bus service may vary, so check with local transit providers for schedules. Once in Keene, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to take you to the trailhead on Porter Mountain Road, as public transport does not reach the trailhead directly. Expect to pay around $20-$30 for the taxi ride, depending on the distance and time of day.

• Hiking

  After parking at the trailhead, you will begin your hike from the parking area. The hike to the summit of Porter Mountain is approximately 2.4 miles one way, with a moderate incline. Be sure to follow the marked trail and bring plenty of water and snacks for the journey. The trail is well-maintained but can be rocky in places, so wear appropriate footwear.
