If you are traveling by car from anywhere in Fire Island, you will first need to take the ferry back to the mainland. The ferry departs from locations like Cherry Grove or Ocean Beach. Once on the mainland, head south on Route 27 (Sunrise Highway) towards Great River. Take exit 47 for NY-111 N towards Hauppauge. Merge onto NY-111 N, then turn left onto Montauk Highway (NY-27A). Continue on Montauk Highway for approximately 2 miles, and you will see Bayard Cutting Arboretum on your right at 440 Montauk Hwy, Great River, NY 11739. Parking is available on-site.

To reach Bayard Cutting Arboretum using public transportation, first take the ferry from Fire Island to the mainland (Cherry Grove or Ocean Beach to Sayville). Once you arrive in Sayville, take the Suffolk County Transit bus route S40 towards Bay Shore. Get off at the stop closest to Montauk Highway (be sure to check the bus schedule for exact times). From there, it is about a 10-minute walk to the arboretum at 440 Montauk Hwy, Great River, NY 11739. Be aware of the bus fare which is typically around $2.25.
