Ensure to inform the driver that you will be getting off at Matamata. Once you arrive in Matamata, you can explore the area on foot.
Train
From Hamilton, take a train from the Hamilton Train Station located on Tristram Street. Board a train heading to Papakura and change at Papakura for a train to Matamata. The total travel time is around 1 hour and 30 minutes. After reaching Matamata, follow the signs to the town center, which is a short walk from the train station.
Cycle
If you're feeling adventurous, you can rent a bike from one of the local rental shops in Hamilton. Follow the river path along the Waikato River, heading east towards Matamata. The ride is approximately 45 km and will take around 2-3 hours depending on your cycling speed. Be sure to stay on designated cycling paths and enjoy the scenic views along the way.
Walking
Walking to Matamata from Hamilton is not practical due to the distance of approximately 50 km. However, if you are near the edge of Hamilton and wish to hike, you can walk towards State Highway 27 and follow it towards Matamata.
