From the Nelson city center, head east on Trafalgar Street towards Hardy Street. Continue straight onto the Maitai River Walkway, which is a scenic pathway along the river. Follow the walkway until you reach the Maitai Dam, which will take about 30-40 minutes. Once you reach the dam, look for the signs indicating the start of the Coppermine Trail. The trailhead is located at the beginning of the road leading up to the Coppermine Trail.

Public Transport
Catch the 'Maitai Valley' bus from the Nelson Bus Station, which is located at the corner of Collingwood and Bridge Streets. The bus will take you to a stop near the Maitai Valley. Once you get off, walk towards the Maitai River Walkway and follow the path until you arrive at the Maitai Dam. From there, follow the signs to the Coppermine Trailhead, which is just a short walk from the dam.
