If you're starting from Whangarei, take State Highway 1 heading north. Continue for approximately 60 kilometers until you reach the town of Kamo. From Kamo, take State Highway 14 towards Dargaville. After about 30 kilometers, turn left onto State Highway 12. Follow this road for around 20 kilometers until you reach the junction for State Highway 1 again. Take a right to merge onto State Highway 1, then follow the signs for Hātea River. The river is located near the town center in Whangarei. Look for parking options along the waterfront.

From Whangarei, you can take a bus from the Whangarei Transport Centre. Look for buses heading towards Dargaville or any service that stops at Whangarei City Centre. The journey typically takes about 30-45 minutes. Once you arrive at Whangarei City Centre, exit the bus and walk towards the waterfront where Hātea River is located. There are signs directing you to the river, and it’s a short 10-minute walk from the bus stop.
