To reach Matai Falls by car, start from Dunedin. Head south on State Highway 1 (SH1) for about 1.5 hours until you reach Balclutha. Turn onto State Highway 8 (SH8) and continue towards the Catlins region. Follow SH8 for approximately 30 minutes until you reach the intersection with State Highway 92 (SH92). Take SH92, which will lead you to Owaka. From Owaka, take the Catlins Road (also known as Owaka Valley Road) for about 20 minutes, until you reach the Matai Falls car park.
