Car
To reach Mount Cargill by car, start by navigating to the city of Dunedin, as it is the nearest major city to Mount Cargill. From the center of Dunedin, head north on George Street, which will become the Northern Motorway (State Highway 1) as you leave the city. After about 7 km, take the exit towards Port Chalmers and continue on State Highway 88. After approximately 4 km, turn left onto Mount Cargill Road. Follow this road for about 3 km until you reach the entrance to the Mount Cargill track. There is no entrance fee, but ensure your vehicle is parked in designated areas to avoid fines.
Public Transportation
If you prefer public transportation, take the bus from Dunedin to Port Chalmers. The bus service is provided by the Otago Regional Council, and you can board the bus from various stops in Dunedin. Once you arrive at Port Chalmers, you can either walk or take a taxi to Mount Cargill Road. The taxi ride will be approximately 10-15 minutes and may cost around NZD 20-30. Alternatively, check for local shuttle services that may offer rides to the Mount Cargill track area.
Walking
If you're feeling adventurous and are already near the base of Mount Cargill, you can opt to walk from the nearest bus stop. If you disembark at the Port Chalmers bus stop, you can walk approximately 2.5 km to reach Mount Cargill Road. The walk is uphill and should take around 30-40 minutes, so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for a bit of a hike before you start your climb!
