Car
If you're traveling by car, start your journey from Invercargill, the main city in Southland. Head north on State Highway 1 towards Gore for approximately 60 km. At Gore, take the exit onto State Highway 94 towards Te Anau. Continue along SH94 for about 90 km until you reach Te Anau. Once in Te Anau, follow signs for the Kepler Track, which will lead you to the Kepler Track car park, located at the end of Te Anau - Manapouri Road. The car park is the starting point for the hike to Luxmore Cave. Note that there is no cost for parking at this location, but make sure you are aware of the local regulations regarding parking.

Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a bus from Invercargill to Te Anau. The bus journey typically takes around 2 hours. Once you arrive in Te Anau, you can either walk or take a taxi to the Kepler Track car park. Make sure to check the local bus schedules in advance as they may vary. The cost for the bus ticket from Invercargill to Te Anau is approximately NZD 40-50. After reaching the car park, you will need to hike the Kepler Track to Luxmore Cave, which is about 6-7 hours one way, so ensure you are prepared for a long hike.

Once you reach the Kepler Track car park, begin your hike towards Luxmore Cave. The trail is well-marked and offers stunning views along the way. You will initially ascend through beech forest before reaching alpine areas. The cave is located about 5 km from the Luxmore Hut, which is a recommended stop for hikers. Ensure you have adequate supplies, including food, water, and proper hiking gear, as it is a challenging hike with changes in weather. Remember to allow sufficient time for your return journey.
