Car
If you're traveling by car, start by heading south on State Highway 60 from Nelson or Takaka. Follow the highway until you reach the junction with Aorere Valley Road. Turn onto Aorere Valley Road and continue for about 12 km. Look out for the signs directing you towards the Aorere Goldfields Conservation Area. Once you reach Devils Boots Road, turn left, and you will find the entrance to the Aorere Goldfields shortly after. The total driving time is approximately 1.5 hours from Nelson.
Public Transportation
For those using public transport, take a bus from Nelson to Takaka. You can catch the bus from the Nelson bus station. Once in Takaka, you will need to take a taxi or a shuttle service to the Aorere Goldfields. Ensure you arrange the taxi in advance, as services may be limited. The bus ride typically takes around 1.5 hours, and the taxi ride from Takaka to Aorere Goldfields takes approximately 30 minutes. Check the local bus schedules for current service times and costs.
Walking/Hiking
If you're already in the area and prefer to hike, you can access the Aorere Goldfields Track from the beginning of Devils Boots Road. Make sure to bring plenty of water and food, and wear suitable hiking boots. The track is approximately 4 km one way and takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to walk each way, depending on your fitness level. Keep an eye out for the beautiful scenery and historical gold mining sites along the path.
