Getting There

    If you're driving from Nelson, take State Highway 6 heading south. Continue along this scenic route until you reach the town of Hokitika. From Hokitika, continue on State Highway 6 for approximately 140 kilometers (about 1 hour and 45 minutes) until you reach Fox Glacier. Look for signs indicating 'Lake Matheson Walk' once you arrive in Fox Glacier. Park your car at the Lake Matheson car park, which is well signposted.

    To reach Lake Matheson by public transport, take a bus from Nelson to Greymouth via the Intercity service.
