Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the center of Fox Glacier. Head south on State Highway 6 (SH6) towards Franz Josef Glacier. After approximately 5 kilometers, turn left onto Lake Matheson Road. Continue on Lake Matheson Road for about 2 kilometers until you reach the Lake Matheson car park. Park your car here and follow the signs to the Lake Gault Track, which starts near the main entrance to Lake Matheson.

If you prefer public transportation, check with local bus services in Fox Glacier that may offer routes to Lake Matheson. Once you arrive at the Lake Matheson bus stop, follow the signs to the car park. From there, walk towards the Lake Gault Track entrance, which is located near the main pathway leading to the lake.

For those who enjoy walking, you can hike from the township of Fox Glacier to Lake Matheson. The walk is approximately 5 kilometers one way. Begin at the Fox Glacier township and head towards Lake Matheson via Lake Matheson Road. This scenic walk takes you through lush rainforest and offers stunning views of the mountains. Once you arrive at the Lake Matheson car park, start following the signs to the Lake Gault Track.
