Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving from downtown Foothills, start by heading southwest on Main St toward 2nd St. Continue onto NC-181 N (follow signs for Morganton) for approximately 15 miles. Merge onto I-40 W toward Asheville. After about 20 miles, take exit 105 for NC-126 toward Lake James. Turn left onto NC-126 W and follow it for about 7 miles. Then, turn right onto Lake James State Park Rd. Follow this road for another 2 miles until you reach the park entrance at 2229 Lake James State Park Rd, Nebo, NC 28761. Parking is available at the park, and there may be a small fee for entry, so please check the park's website for current rates.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Lake James State Park using public transportation, you will need to take a combination of bus and taxi services. Start by taking the public bus from Foothills to Morganton Transit Station. From there, you will need to use a rideshare service or taxi to reach the park. The taxi ride from Morganton to Lake James State Park will take about 30 minutes. Be sure to check the local bus schedules for the most current times, and expect to pay for both bus and taxi fare. Check the local transportation authority’s website for fare information.

• Bicycle

  If you're feeling adventurous and want to cycle to Lake James State Park, you can start in downtown Foothills. Head southwest on Main St, then follow NC-181 N. After about 15 miles, you’ll merge onto I-40 W. While riding, be cautious as this route includes sections with vehicle traffic. After about 20 miles, take exit 105 and follow NC-126 W for about 7 miles, then turn right onto Lake James State Park Rd and continue for 2 miles. Make sure to wear a helmet and follow all traffic rules.
