History of Lake Texoma

Creation of Lake Texoma

Lake Texoma, one of the largest reservoirs in the United States, was created in 1944 by the impoundment of the Red River behind the Denison Dam. This monumental project, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was undertaken primarily for flood control, water supply, and hydroelectric power generation. The construction of the Denison Dam began in 1939 and was a significant engineering feat of its time, requiring the relocation of communities and farmlands along the river's path.

Long before the creation of Lake Texoma, the area was inhabited by various Indigenous tribes such as the Caddo, Comanche, and Kiowa. The Great Red River Raft
