Car
If you are driving from the city of Baker City, head west on I-84 W towards La Grande. After about 35 miles, take exit 265 for US-30 W. Continue on US-30 W for approximately 16 miles until you reach the town of Haines. From Haines, turn left onto OR-7 S and follow it for about 18 miles. Then, turn right onto Forest Road 39. Follow this road; it becomes a gravel road and may require a high-clearance vehicle as you approach Strawberry Mountain. Continue on Forest Road 39 until you reach the Strawberry Mountain trailhead.
Public Transportation + Car Rental
If you are using public transportation, take a Greyhound bus to Baker City. Upon arrival, you can rent a car from one of the local rental services. From Baker City, follow the same driving directions as above. Make sure to check your rental agreement for mileage restrictions, as you will be driving on some unpaved roads.
Hiking Access
For those who are already in the vicinity of the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness, you may consider hiking into the area. The most common access point is via the Strawberry Lake Trailhead. From the town of John Day, take OR-26 W for about 27 miles until you reach the junction with OR-7 S. Take OR-7 S for about 35 miles until you reach the Strawberry Lake Trailhead. Note that this option requires a good level of physical fitness and proper hiking gear.
