Getting There

• Car

  If you're starting from the city of Burns, take U.S. Route 20 east for approximately 45 miles. After passing through Hines, look for the junction with OR-395. Turn north onto OR-395 and continue for about 35 miles. You'll reach the town of John Day. From John Day, take U.S. Route 26 west for about 30 miles until you hit the junction with OR-7. Turn south on OR-7 and follow it for about 18 miles until you reach the town of Canyon City. The Strawberry Mountain Wilderness is located just a few miles southeast of Canyon City. Follow the local signs to access the wilderness area.

• Public Transportation

  Take a Greyhound bus or a local shuttle service to John Day from major cities in Eastern Oregon. Once in John Day, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to get to Canyon City. Public transportation options may be limited, so it's advisable to check schedules in advance. After arriving in Canyon City, you can rent a car or find local services that offer rides to the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness. Be prepared for additional costs such as taxi fares.

• Bicycle

  If you're an adventurous cyclist, you can reach Strawberry Mountain Wilderness by biking from John Day. From U.S. Route 26, take OR-7 south towards Canyon City. The ride is approximately 18 miles and offers stunning views of Eastern Oregon's landscape. Ensure you have a good map and enough supplies, as the route can be challenging.

• Hiking

  For those already in the vicinity and looking for a hiking adventure, there are several trails leading into the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness. From Canyon City, you can hike into the wilderness directly. Ensure you are well-prepared with maps, sufficient water, and food, as the trails can be remote and challenging.
