If you're driving, start from the town of Jefferson, Oregon. Head east on OR-164 E for approximately 6 miles until you reach the junction with US-20. Turn left onto US-20 E and continue for about 18 miles. Watch for signs for the Mount Jefferson Wilderness, and then turn left onto NF-12, which will lead you towards the wilderness area. Follow NF-12 for about 8 miles until you reach the Mount Jefferson Wilderness trailhead. There is no fee for parking at the trailhead.
Public Transportation + Car
For those relying on public transportation, take the bus to the nearest city, which is Salem, Oregon. From Salem, you can catch the Cherriots bus service to Jefferson. Once in Jefferson, follow the car guidance as described above. Note that public transit schedules may vary, so check the Cherriots website for the most current information and potential costs. You may need to arrange for a rideshare or taxi from Jefferson to reach the trailhead.
Bicycling
If you're feeling adventurous and would like to bike, you can follow the same route as the car directions. Start from Jefferson and bike along OR-164 E for approximately 6 miles, then US-20 E for 18 miles. After reaching NF-12, continue biking along this road for 8 miles to the trailhead. Be aware that this route includes some steep inclines, and you'll want to ensure you're well-prepared with water and supplies.
