History of DHA Lahore

The Defence Housing Society Begins

DHA Lahore grew from a residential scheme associated with Pakistan’s defence community, established in the 1970s on land west of Lahore’s established urban districts. Its original purpose was to provide planned housing for serving and retired members of the armed forces and their families, although the district later developed a much broader residential and commercial identity. The early layout followed the principles of a low-density garden suburb: separate houses, broad roads, utility infrastructure and reserved land for schools, mosques, parks and community facilities. This model distinguished the developing society from the denser, more organically evolved neighbourhoods closer to Lahore’s historic core.

From Society to Authority

As the scheme expanded, its administration and development structure became more formal, and the Defence Housing Society evolved into the Defence Housing Authority, commonly known as DHA Lahore. Successive phases extended the district westwards and southwards, adding new residential blocks, commercial areas and institutional facilities. The expansion reflected Lahore’s outward growth and the increasing demand for secure, planned suburban housing. Roads connecting the district with the cantonment, airport approaches and Bedian Road helped turn what had once been a peripheral development into an important part of the metropolitan urban landscape.

Commercial Centres and New Phases

The established phases gradually acquired their own commercial identities, with Y Block and H Block becoming familiar destinations for retail, cafés, restaurants and daily services. Later development introduced larger plots, apartment and mixed-use schemes, new schools, sports facilities and more deliberately landscaped public environments. Projects around Raya illustrate this newer phase of DHA’s growth, combining housing with leisure, retail and dining.
