Unusual, fun, and active ecosystem experience

This is a very unusual ecosystem located on the south Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, where the river meets the sea, just a few kilometres north of Panama. The ecosystem is where sea water and fresh water mix, and the area full of mangroves, and rich with birds including heron, osprey, monkees, sloth and also big cats (though we smelt them but didn't see any). For us, this was also a very personal experience, with just my wife and self, and our guide, giving us the opportunity to choose exactly where we went and how long we spent in each place. Given the lagoon is close to the sea, it would also be possible, to spend more time in the area, explore the village, and continue along the road from Gandoca (about a mile) to the coast and spend time on the local beach. For potential visitors, please also note that getting to Gandoca is also an adventure. We travelled from Puerto Viejo. Initially our Wave sat nav had us travelling north (the opposite direction to Gandoca) and some 50km. Though I over-ruled this and drive south, just 24km to Gandoca. The consequence being we travelled on gravelly roads, with amazing jungle on either side, and for which a 4WD is essential. The road from the main 36 road to Gandoca is also gravelly. The journey took about an hour. As darkness was falling, we can back to Puerto Viejo via the longer tarmacked road (for safety!). When entering Gandoca, to find your guide, please also note and don't despair, that the kayaks are kept in a very rural home location. From here it is a short walk, along a jungle track to the river. While we helped carry the kayaks, this was also a fun part of the experience as a troop of white faced monkeys, including a mum carrying a baby, crashed through the trees just above us.
