Car
If you are traveling by car, start by heading to Interstate 81 (I-81). Depending on where you are in the Appalachian Mountains, you can access I-81 from various routes. Once you are on I-81, take Exit 2 for MD-68 towards Hagerstown. Continue on MD-68 until you reach Smithsburg. From Smithsburg, follow signs for South Mountain State Park. After approximately 5 miles, you will arrive at High Rock, located at the coordinates 39.6949909, -77.5236036. Parking is available near the trails.
Public Transportation
Using public transportation is less direct and may require several transfers. Start by taking a bus to Hagerstown, MD. From there, you can catch a local bus or taxi service to Smithsburg. Once in Smithsburg, you will need to arrange for transportation via taxi or rideshare to reach High Rock, as public transportation does not extend directly to the site. Be sure to check local bus schedules as they may vary and ensure you have a plan for return transportation.
Hiking
For those already in the area, hiking to High Rock is a popular option. There are several trails available. If you are in South Mountain State Park, follow the Appalachian Trail to reach High Rock. The trail is well-marked, and the hike can be strenuous, so come prepared with water and snacks. The views from High Rock are worth the effort. Ensure you check trail conditions and park hours before starting your hike.
