Car Rental
If you're traveling around Vieques by car, you can rent a vehicle from local rental agencies at the airport or in Esperanza. From any point on the island, use Route 201 to navigate between the main attractions. For example, to reach Mosquito Bay (a popular bioluminescent bay), drive south on Route 201 and follow the signs to the bay. Parking is available on-site, but arrive early, especially on weekends, as it can get crowded.
Public Transportation (Publicos)
Publicos are shared taxis that operate on Vieques. To catch a publico, head to a main road or designated pickup points in Esperanza or Isabel Segunda. To reach Playa La Chiva, for instance, find a publico heading east and tell the driver your destination. The fare is typically around $3-5 per person, and the drivers are friendly and knowledgeable about the island. Always confirm the fare before starting your ride.
Bicycle Rental
Biking is a great way to explore Vieques at your own pace. Several shops in Esperanza and Isabel Segunda offer bicycle rentals. Once you have your bike, you can easily reach popular beaches like Playa Caracas and Playa Grande. Just follow the coastal roads and enjoy the scenic views. Rental prices are generally around $10-15 per day.
Walking
If you're staying in Esperanza, many attractions are within walking distance. For example, to reach the local beaches such as Playa Esperanza, simply head west along the beachfront promenade. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially during the hot afternoons.
Ferry from Fajardo
If you are traveling to Vieques from the main island of Puerto Rico, you can take a ferry from Fajardo. The ferry terminal is located at 1 Calle 1, Fajardo, PR.
