Hi, I'm Eve. Here are a few practical things to know before exploring Dutch Island Lighthouse.
Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you are driving, start by heading towards Jamestown, RI. From downtown Newport, take the Newport Bridge (Route 138) onto Jamestown. Once on the island, continue straight onto North Road. Follow North Road until you reach the end, where you'll see a small parking area near the Dutch Island Ferry launch. Note that parking is limited, so plan accordingly. From here, you will need to take a boat to reach Dutch Island Lighthouse.
Public Transportation + Boat
Begin your journey by taking a bus to Jamestown. Check the local RIPTA bus schedule for routes that go to Jamestown from Newport. Once you arrive in Jamestown, you will need to walk to the Dutch Island Ferry launch point (approximately a 15-minute walk from the bus stop). After reaching the ferry launch, you will need to arrange for a boat to take you to Dutch Island Lighthouse. Note that ferry services are not always regular, so check the schedule ahead of time to ensure you can reach the lighthouse.
Boat Rental
If you are adventurous, consider renting a kayak or small boat from one of the local rental shops in Jamestown. Launch from the nearby boat ramp and paddle over to Dutch Island. The lighthouse is located approximately 1.5 miles offshore, so ensure you are comfortable with this distance and have the proper safety equipment. Be mindful of the weather and tides before heading out.
