Discover the Heritage of the Portuguese Discovery Monument in Newport

Getting There

• Bus

  From Pawtucket, head to the nearest RIPTA bus stop. You can take the Route 1 bus towards Newport. Make sure to check the bus schedule for the most accurate times. Stay on the bus until you reach the Newport stop at Broadway and Farewell Street. Once you disembark, walk down Farewell Street towards the waterfront, and then follow the signs towards the Portuguese Discovery Monument, located at the end of the waterfront path.

• Train

  Make your way to the Pawtucket/Central Falls train station. Board the MBTA commuter rail on the Providence Line heading towards Wickford Junction. Get off at the Kingston station. From Kingston, take the RIPTA Route 14 bus towards Newport. You will arrive in Newport, and from the bus stop, it is a short walk to the Portuguese Discovery Monument located along the waterfront.

• Bicycle

  If you prefer cycling, rent a bike from one of the local bike rental shops in Pawtucket. Head towards the East Bay Bike Path, which connects to the waterfront in Bristol and continues towards Newport. Follow the bike path until you reach Newport, and then make your way to the waterfront where the Portuguese Discovery Monument is located. Be mindful of traffic laws and bike safely.

• Walking

  If you're feeling adventurous and want to explore, start walking towards Newport. Head south on Main Street until you reach the intersection with East Avenue. Continue straight onto East Avenue which will lead you to the waterfront in Newport. Once you arrive at the waterfront, follow the path along the water until you reach the Portuguese Discovery Monument. This is a longer option, so be prepared for a good walk!
