Grota Ursului Travel Guide

Grota Ursului is a man-made tunnel approximately 150 metres long, originally excavated as part of an abandoned plan to manage water for the Bolboci hydro scheme. When the dam location was moved, the passage was left open through the limestone of Cheile Tătarului. Today it functions as a simple roadside curiosity rather than a developed cave attraction.

Visitors park informally beside DJ714 and enter the dark, cool passage. No lighting exists, so a headlamp or torch is essential. The floor is uneven in places and may be damp. The walk takes only a few minutes yet creates a clear sense of passing through the mountain before emerging to steep limestone walls and the Ialomița valley.

The tunnel sits inside the Cheile Tătarului mixed nature reserve, part of Bucegi Natural Park. The surrounding gorge features karst formations, fossils, and the river below. The site lies at roughly 1,400–1,500 metres altitude in a landscape shaped by both natural processes and 20th-century engineering decisions.

The stop is free and brief, typically 10–20 minutes. It works best as part of a longer drive or hike along the Padina–Peștera Ialomiței road. No facilities are present at the tunnel itself; services exist at nearby cabanas and the Ialomița Cave site.

Summer and early autumn provide the most reliable road access and clearest gorge views. Winter snow and ice can close or make DJ714 hazardous. The tunnel interior remains cool and dark year-round regardless of surface conditions.

The tunnel is distinct from the natural Peștera Urșilor in Bihor and from chambers inside nearby Peștera Ialomiței. It is commonly combined with stops at Lacul Bolboci or the Padina plateau when exploring the Bucegi high country from Sinaia or Moroeni.
