Private 9-Day Transylvania and Bucovina UNESCO Tour in Historical Romania
Excellent private tour combining must-visit sights with local flavour
We actually did an 11 day private tour (not on the list) so we could see more of Romania. Bogdan, our guide and driver, was excellent: knowledgeable and friendly. He lived in Ireland for 7 years so it was easy to have a real conversation with him. Our transport was clean and comfortable. We stayed in a mix of hotels and guest houses. A couple of the guest houses were amongst the tour highlights with home-cooked Romanian food, wonderful breakfasts and comfortable rooms. In general we were pleasantly surprised with the food. You do not have to be religious to marvel at the amazing painted churches, monasteries and cathedrals. The natural scenery was varied and often beautiful, especially in the mountains, and many of the villages, towns and cities were delightful. And don’t miss the Transfagarasan highway - it’s not just for Top Gear enthusiasts! We left feeling that we had a much better understanding of this part of Europe and were pleased that we had managed to see it before it had fully modernised. We also had two days in Bucharest (not part of the tour) which gave us the opportunity to see the Palace of Parliament and other must-see places in the capital.

A great way to delve more deeply into the history and culture of Tranylvania
The visits to Sighisoara and Sibiu were breathtaking and unmissable, but the real value in this two day tour lies in the chance to explore the history and culture of Transylvania in a much greater depth by visiting picturesque fortified churches, monasteries, water mills and fortresses, which are typically quieter and less frequented by tourists despite their historical significance. Our guide, Florin, was extremely knowledgeable and helpful.
