Getting There

Walking
Start at the Rubavu town center, located near the main market. Head south on Avenue du Maréchal J. A. Habyarimana. Walk for about 10 minutes until you reach the intersection with Avenue de l'Amitié. Turn left onto Avenue de l'Amitié and continue walking for another 15 minutes until you reach the roundabout at the entrance to the Rubavu District. From the roundabout, take the road leading towards Buyoga, which is a bit more rural and less busy. After about 20 minutes of walking, you will arrive at Buyoga village. Keep an eye out for local signs pointing towards Muyanza Dam. The dam should be visible from a distance as you approach it, located approximately 5 minutes further down the road on your left.

Bicycle
Rent a bicycle from one of the local shops in Rubavu. Start at the main square where the market is located. Cycle south along Avenue du Maréchal J. A. Habyarimana for about 1.5 kilometers until you reach the intersection with Avenue de l'Amitié. Make a left turn onto Avenue de l'Amitié and continue for about 3 kilometers. When you reach the roundabout, take the exit towards Buyoga. After about 4 kilometers, you will see a sign for Muyanza Dam on your right. The dam is about 1 kilometer from the main road, so you may need to do a bit of off-road cycling along the path leading to the dam.

From Rubavu town, head to the local bus station near the main market. Look for buses heading towards Buyoga. Once you board, inform the driver that you are going to Muyanza Dam. The bus ride will take approximately 30 minutes. Get off at the Buyoga stop and walk towards the dam, which is about a 20-minute walk from the bus stop. Follow the signs directing you to Muyanza Dam or ask locals for directions if needed. The dam is located along a clear path that should lead you directly there.
