Mount Liamuiga St Kitts Volcano Adventure

Hike was a challenge but well worth the effort!

We thoroughly enjoyed this hike even though it pushed our fitness to the max. You are not just walking up a sloping hill. You are often times climbing using your hands over rocks and roots. Shamika was a great leader and knew how to motivate without discouraging people. She would make the difficult parts like the "root ladder" fun. She challenged people to look at difficult sections like a puzzle. We were a bit limited on time because of our short cruise ship stay in St. Kitts so she started off pretty quickly but when we realized we were doing OK on time she eased up and let us take more breaks and pictures. Warning - this hike comes with about 2000' of elevation climb which will take somewhere around 2 hours up and 2 hours down. If you don't have a concept of a 2000' elevation then you might want to consider some practice hikes on a mountain near you. Tips: they provide water bottles at the start of the hike. I had one already and took one of theirs with me up the climb but regretted not taking more. So I suggest three or four 20 oz bottles. And I would also suggest bringing some electrolytes like Gatorade powder to mix in one or two of your bottles. We had no insects and very little sun because of the jungle coverage but it was nevertheless very hot and humid - especially in the beginning/lower parts. You might want an absorbent hat or sweatband to keep sweat out of your eyes.
