Walking
From the center of Asau, head southwest on the main road (Asau Road) towards the coast. Continue walking along this road for about 1.5 kilometers until you reach the intersection with the road leading to the village of Falealupo. Turn left onto the Falealupo Road and follow it for approximately 2 kilometers. You will see signs indicating the way to Mount Matavanu. Keep an eye out for local landmarks such as the Asau Wharf on your right. As you approach the foot of Mount Matavanu, you may need to ask locals for directions, as paths may not be clearly marked.
Biking
If you have access to a bicycle, start from the center of Asau and ride southwest on Asau Road. After about 1.5 kilometers, take a left turn onto Falealupo Road. Continue cycling for roughly 2 kilometers. You may encounter some uneven terrain as you approach Mount Matavanu, so proceed with caution. Look for signs or locals who can guide you further towards the volcano. Ensure your bike is suitable for this terrain.
Hiking
For those experienced in hiking, you can begin your trek from Asau by taking the path that leads directly towards Mount Matavanu. Ensure you have a good map or download a GPS application on your smartphone that works offline. The hike is about 4 kilometers and will take you through lush forests. It's advisable to start early in the morning to avoid the heat and bring plenty of water. Follow the natural trails and stay vigilant for wildlife.
