History of Al Murabba

A Palace Outside Old Riyadh

Al Murabba’s modern identity began with the construction of Murabba Palace outside the older walled core of Riyadh during the reign of King Abdulaziz. Built in the 1930s, the palace formed part of a royal compound set apart from the dense traditional settlement. Its name is associated with its square or rectilinear form, a practical architectural idea that also gave the surrounding area its name. The palace complex represented the expanding scale of the capital as political authority, administration and royal residence moved beyond the older city centre.

The Palace and State Formation

Murabba Palace became an important setting during the early decades of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which was unified in 1932.
