History of Al Olaya

From Oasis Settlement to Expanding Capital

Al Olaya’s history is closely tied to Riyadh’s transformation from a relatively compact Najdi settlement into Saudi Arabia’s expanding capital. The area lies north of the old walled core, whose traditional quarters were concentrated around what is now central Riyadh. As government, commerce and housing spread along new roads during the twentieth century, land beyond the historic centre was absorbed into the metropolitan city. The name Al Olaya, commonly understood as referring to an upper or higher area, came to designate a northern urban district rather than one of Riyadh’s oldest quarters. Oil-era prosperity, state investment and rapid population growth reshaped Al Olaya during the later twentieth century. New arterial roads, offices, hotels and commercial premises established the district as part of Riyadh’s northern business corridor, while Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Road became widely known as Tahlia Street. The change was not simply architectural: commercial activity, professional employment and new retail formats altered how residents and visitors used this part of the capital.
