Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car from Port Loko District to Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, start by heading south on the main road toward Freetown. Follow the signs for the A1 highway, which is the primary route connecting Port Loko to Freetown. The journey will take approximately 2-3 hours depending on traffic. Once you reach Freetown, continue following the A1 until you see signs for the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary. The sanctuary is located off the main road, so you may need to navigate a short distance on local roads to reach the entrance.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary via public transportation, take a taxi or shared car (often referred to as a 'poda poda') from Port Loko to Freetown. The fare is usually around 10,000 - 15,000 Leones. Upon arriving in Freetown, you will need to switch to a local taxi or ride-sharing service to get to the sanctuary. Make sure to inform the driver that you are going to Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, as it is a well-known destination. The additional fare for this leg of the trip may vary, but expect to pay around 20,000 Leones.

• Combination (Car & Walking)

  If you have access to a car but are not able to drive directly to the sanctuary, you can park at a nearby location and walk the final distance. After driving to Freetown and following the signs to Tacugama, look for a safe place to park. Once parked, follow the walking path or inquire with locals for directions to the sanctuary entrance, which is approximately 1 km from the main road. It's advisable to keep your valuables secure while walking.
