A Landscape of Southern Hills

The Southern Ridges follows a series of low hills and ridgelines in southern Singapore, a landscape shaped over time by tropical vegetation, drainage, roads and urban development. The area was historically less built-up than the central island and included forest, plantations and rural settlements. Pasir Panjang and Wartime Singapore

The ridges form part of the wider Pasir Panjang landscape, which became significant during the Japanese invasion of Singapore in February 1942. Kent Ridge and nearby Bukit Chandu were associated with the Battle of Pasir Panjang, including the defence led by Malay Regiment soldiers at Bukit Chandu. The Reflections at Bukit Chandu heritage centre, near the wider ridge area, interprets this episode and the lives affected by the battle.
