If you are in downtown Custer, start at the Custer County Courthouse located at 420 Mt Rushmore Rd. Head south on Mt Rushmore Rd towards 5th St. Turn left onto 5th St and walk until you reach the intersection with Custer's main road, which is also known as Highway 16. Cross Highway 16 carefully and continue onto the Mickelson Trail entrance, which is located just a short walk from the intersection. Look for the trailhead signs that mark the start of the Mickelson Trail.

Begin at the Custer County Library located at 447 Crook St. Rent a bike from a local shop if you don’t have one. From the library, head east on Crook St until you reach Mt Rushmore Rd. Turn left on Mt Rushmore Rd and continue south. After approximately half a mile, you will find the entrance to the Mickelson Trail on your right. Follow the signs to the trailhead.
