Start at the center of Custer, specifically at Custer County Courthouse located at 420 Mt Rushmore Rd. Head north on Mt Rushmore Rd toward E 6th St for about 0.3 miles until you reach the intersection with US-16. Turn left onto US-16 and walk for approximately 9 miles. You will pass by beautiful landscapes and possibly some wildlife. Once you reach Hill City, you will arrive at the main area, which is close to the local shops and attractions. Hill City is well marked, and you can explore the area on foot from there.

If you have access to a bicycle, start at the Custer County Courthouse. From there, ride north on Mt Rushmore Rd until you get to US-16. Turn left onto US-16 and continue riding for about 9 miles. The ride is scenic and has a dedicated bike lane for much of the route. Upon reaching Hill City, you can park your bike at any of the bike racks available around the main area and explore the town on foot.
