    Walking

    Start at the center of Custer, near the Visitor Information Center on Mount Rushmore Road. Head south on Mount Rushmore Road for about 0.5 miles until you reach the intersection with Custer County Highway 5. Turn left onto Custer County Highway 5 and continue for approximately 1 mile until you reach SD-87. At this point, you will be moving towards the scenic area leading to the Hood Tunnel. Follow SD-87, enjoying the beautiful views along the way. After about 3 miles, you will arrive at Hood Tunnel, which is located at mile post 33. Look for the entrance on your right side.

    Biking

    If you have a bicycle, start from the Custer State Park entrance. Ride along Wildlife Loop Road for about 2 miles, then turn onto SD-87. Continue biking on SD-87 for approximately 5 miles, enjoying the scenery and wildlife. Keep an eye out for Hood Tunnel, which will be on your right at mile post 33. Ensure you are cautious of traffic as you approach the tunnel.
