Getting There

  • Walking

    Start at the center of Custer, near the Visitor Information Center on Mount Rushmore Road. Head south on Mount Rushmore Road for about 0.5 miles until you reach the intersection with Custer County Highway 5. Turn left onto Custer County Highway 5 and continue for approximately 1 mile until you reach SD-87. At this point, you will be moving towards the scenic area leading to the Hood Tunnel. Follow SD-87, enjoying the beautiful views along the way. After about 3 miles, you will arrive at Hood Tunnel, which is located at mile post 33. Look for the entrance on your right side.
