Getting There

  • Hiking

    Start your journey at the Custer State Park Visitor Center located at 342 Cave Rd, Custer, SD 57730. From here, head northwest on SD-87 N for about 1.2 miles. You will reach the entrance to Custer State Park. Once you enter, continue straight for about 4.5 miles, enjoying the scenic views along the way. Look for the signs pointing towards Mount Coolidge Lookout. Follow the signs and take a left onto Mount Coolidge Road (a gravel road). This road will lead you directly to the Mount Coolidge Lookout and Fire Tower. The last stretch is a short hike up to the tower itself, which offers stunning panoramic views of the Black Hills.

    If you're biking, start at the Custer City Park located at 1st St & Custer Ave. Head west on 1st St until you reach the junction with SD-34. Turn left onto SD-34 and then take a quick right onto SD-87 N. Follow the same route as the hiking directions, continuing for about 1.2 miles until you reach the Custer State Park entrance. Once in the park, follow the directions as mentioned above, keeping an eye out for Mount Coolidge Road, which will lead you to the lookout.

    For those who prefer walking, you can begin at the Custer Public Library at 447 Crook St, Custer, SD 57730. Walk north on Crook St until you reach the junction with SD-34. Carefully cross the highway and continue on the shoulder of SD-87 N for about 1.5 miles until you reach the entrance to Custer State Park. After entering, continue as per the hiking directions, following the signs to Mount Coolidge Lookout. The final approach to the tower will require a short hike uphill.
