Public Transportation
From Mount Rushmore National Memorial, walk to the nearest bus stop for the Black Hills Transit (Route 8) located at the parking area. Board the bus heading towards Rapid City, and remain on the bus for approximately 30 minutes. Once you arrive at the Rapid City Transit Center, transfer to a Route 7 bus that will take you directly to the Black Hills Caverns. Get off at the stop closest to 2600 Cavern Rd, which is a short walk from the caverns entrance.
Bicycle Rental
If you prefer biking, rent a bicycle from a local rental shop in Mount Rushmore. Head east on SD-244 for about 2 miles until you reach US-16. Turn right onto US-16 and continue for about 5 miles. Look for Cavern Rd on your left. Turn left onto Cavern Rd and follow it for about 1 mile until you arrive at Black Hills Caverns. Make sure to wear a helmet and follow all traffic rules.
Walking
If you are feeling adventurous and want to walk, start at Mount Rushmore and head south on SD-244. Continue walking for about 3 miles until you reach the junction with US-16. This walk will take you through some beautiful Black Hills scenery. Once you reach US-16, turn right and walk for another 3 miles. Look for the sign for Cavern Rd on your left. Turn onto Cavern Rd and walk approximately 1 mile to reach Black Hills Caverns.
