Car
If you are driving, start by heading towards the town of Bakio, located approximately 35 km east of Bilbao. From Bilbao, take the A-8 motorway towards San Sebastián and exit at Bakio (Exit 23). Follow the signs for Bakio and then for Gaztelugatxe, which will lead you to the BI-631 road. Continue on this road until you reach the parking area near the entrance to Gaztelugatxe. Be aware that parking may incur a fee, typically around €2-€5 depending on the duration of your stay.
Public Transportation
To reach Gaztelugatxe using public transportation, take the bus from Bilbao to Bakio. The bus service (Bizkaibus line A3518) operates regularly from Bilbao's Termibus station. The journey takes about 45 minutes. Once you arrive in Bakio, you can catch a local taxi for a short ride to the Gaztelugatxe parking area, which should cost around €10-€15. Alternatively, you can walk from Bakio to Gaztelugatxe, which takes approximately 30-40 minutes.
Walking
If you choose to walk from the parking area to the actual site of Gaztelugatxe, be prepared for a scenic but steep hike. The path consists of approximately 241 steps leading down to the islet where the hermitage is located. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and carry water, especially during warmer months.
