Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Walking
If you are starting from Negombo Beach, head east towards the main road (Lewis Place). Walk along the beach road until you reach the main intersection with the Colombo - Negombo main road. Cross the road and continue straight for about 500 meters until you reach the roundabout. At the roundabout, take the second exit onto Main Street (Kochchikade). Continue walking for about 1 kilometer, and you will see the Dutch Canal on your left side. Follow the path along the canal for a scenic walk.
Tuk-Tuk
Find a tuk-tuk stand near your location, or simply flag one down on the street. Tell the driver you want to go to the Dutch Canal. The driver will likely take you via Main Street, which is the quickest route. The ride should take approximately 10 minutes, depending on traffic. Once you arrive, you can ask the driver to drop you off at the nearest point to the canal.
Bicycle
If you have rented a bicycle, head towards Main Street (Kochchikade) from your location. Cycle straight down Main Street for about 1 kilometer until you reach the Dutch Canal. There are several spots along the canal where you can park your bicycle and enjoy the beautiful views.
Public Bus
Locate the nearest bus stop and look for a bus heading towards Colombo. Get off at the 'Kochchikade' bus stop, which is near the Dutch Canal. From the bus stop, walk towards Main Street and head east. The canal will be a short walk from the bus stop. This option is budget-friendly, but be prepared for a bus that may be crowded at times.
