Getting There

    From Yala National Park, exit the park through the main entrance. Head south on the A2 highway towards Tissamaharama. After approximately 30 minutes of driving, you will reach the Tissamaharama junction. Turn left onto the A18 highway towards Kataragama. Continue for about 30 kilometers until you reach Kataragama. The Kataragama Holy Sanctuaries will be on your right as you approach the town, at the coordinates 6.4220717, 81.3316903. There is usually no entrance fee for the sanctuaries, but parking may have a nominal fee.

  • Public Transportation

    From Yala National Park, you can take a bus to Tissamaharama from the nearby bus stop. Buses run frequently and the fare is quite affordable (around LKR 50-100). Once you arrive in Tissamaharama, you can take another bus heading to Kataragama. The journey will take approximately 1-1.5 hours in total. Upon reaching Kataragama, the Holy Sanctuaries are a short walk from the bus stop, approximately 1 kilometer away. Look for signs directing you to the sanctuaries or ask locals for guidance.
