Backa Rock Carvings Travel Guide

The Backa Rock Carvings stretch along a kilometer-long trail known as Via Sacra, or the Sacred Way, following the old village road in Brastad. This path was likely a hub for seasonal festivals during the Nordic Bronze Age, drawing people from across Stångenäset. Exposed rock outcrops bear witness to communal rituals, with carvings etched directly into the stone as enduring traces of prehistoric life.

Among the 600 petroglyphs on 32 surfaces, motifs abound: intricate ships symbolizing voyages, radiant sun wheels invoking celestial powers, cup marks for offerings, and dynamic chariots drawn by horses—status symbols of elite society. Human figures stride boldly, while abstract shapes like footprints add mystery. New discoveries continue to emerge, enriching the site's narrative.

Dominating the collection is the Shoemaker, a towering six-foot figure clutching an axe, possibly a weather god akin to later Thor. Documented as early as 1627 by Norwegian scholar Peder Alfsön—who mistook it for a woman—this is Europe's earliest scientifically recorded rock carving. Nearby figures also wield axes, hinting at shared mythological themes.

Backa's density sets it apart in Bohuslän, but Lysekil municipality holds more: Scandinavia's earliest depicted murder on a flat rock, sword-lifting warriors, and a life-sized Bronze Age sword carving. A stone etched with a ship design further distinguishes the area, uncovered in recent inventories alongside violent motifs unique to Brastad.

Carvings cluster on some 20 outcrops, suggesting Backa as a religious center from 1700–500 BC. Sun crosses, two-wheeled carriages, and the Shoemaker point to magical-religious practices. The site's variety implies gatherings for worship, fertility rites, or celestial celebrations under open skies.
