Where the sea and town meet

Strandpromenaden traces nearly 9.3 kilometres of Bohuslän coastline, alternating between sheltered woodland, urban waterfront and exposed sea‑edge boardwalks. The promenade begins near the ancient shell banks at Skalbankarna and winds south through central Uddevalla before finishing at the bathing places around Lindesnäs. Along the way the path hugs granite outcrops, threads past sheltered inlets and opens to broad views across the inlet and open sea.

Three distinct stretches, each with its own character

The route is commonly described in three parts: the wooded, the urban and the shoreline sections. In the wooded areas you’ll find quieter, tree‑lined tracks and pine forest scents; in town the promenade passes quays, marinas and municipal spaces where the sound of distant traffic blends with gull calls; the shoreline stretch switches to wooden boardwalks clinging to rock faces and offers the closest, most cinematic encounters with the sea.

Built details and design highlights

The promenade uses a combination of surfaces—gravel, asphalt and roughly 600 metres of timber decking where paths are anchored to the rock—so it reads as a deliberately composed route rather than a single type of trail. The path is usually about 3 metres wide in places, regularly waymarked with signs and occasional information panels that explain local natural and cultural features. Sections are lit in the evening between Skeppsviken and Lindesnäs, extending usability after dusk.

Living history around Gustafsberg and shell banks

Historical layers crop up as you walk: the shell banks near the northern end are geological relics more than 10,000 years old, and further along you pass Gustafsberg, once a 18th–19th century bathing resort whose preserved villas and sheltered bay recall Uddevalla’s seaside heritage. The route’s form and alignment were conceived in the early 2000s and the promenade was opened to the public in 2006 as a coherent coastal passage.

Practical character and visitor experience

Strandpromenaden is intentionally accessible: broad sections accommodate cyclists, families and a wide range of walkers, while a handful of steeper or more rugged alternative tracks exist for those seeking rougher terrain. Amenities are distributed along the way—public toilets in town and at key beaches, picnic and seating spots, and parking nodes at several access points—so the promenade works equally well for short stretches or for walking most of the length on a day out.

Seasonal moods and wildlife notes

The promenade is rewarding in every season: spring brings migrating birds and budding shore plants, summer offers bright sea panoramas and bathing chances, autumn coats the woods in russet tones and winter exposes the sculpted granite and wind‑bleached shoreline for stark coastal views. Sea gulls, eider ducks and common shorebirds are frequent companions; mammal sightings are rarer but the coastal habitat supports small coastal fauna and diverse plant communities close to the water.
