Foundations in the Wilderness

In 1838, Stora Kopparbergs Bergslag received permission to establish an ironworks along the small Korsån stream, outlet from Lake Hinsen in Sundborn parish. Young bookkeeper Carl Henric Örtengren, just 23, was tasked with building the facility in untouched wilderness without roads or settlements. Operations began in 1841, processing pig iron from Åg smelter into bar iron using four hearths and three hammers, targeting an annual output of 475 tons.The site's strategic position between Lakes Hinsen and Hyen facilitated transport: pig iron arrived via Svartbäcken and Hinsen, while finished bar iron moved over Hyen to Korså station on the Gävle–Dala railway for export through Gävle.

Innovation and Peak Prosperity

By 1847, Lancashire puddling was introduced, yielding high-quality bar iron with strong market demand. The 1880s and 1890s marked the zenith, producing up to 2,600 tons of bar iron and over 3,000 tons of wrought iron yearly. Population swelled to nearly 400, fostering a self-contained community with works buildings, manager's residence, company store, school, stable, orchestra, dance hall, trade association, mission, and temperance groups.A dedicated cemetery graces the shores of Lilla Logärden, reflecting the isolation of this remote outpost.

Preserved Industrial Legacy

Production ceased in 1930 as Stora Kopparberg shifted focus to Domnarvets järnverk in Borlänge. The site transitioned to forestry until the 1970s, when tourism efforts revived it. Today, Korså Bruk stands as an industriminne, with nearly all original structures and infrastructure intact, including massive water wheels. Two museums illuminate its story: one on industrial processes owned by Falu Gruva, the other on daily life managed by the local heritage association.

Village Life and Traditions

The village, known as Korsån, hosts about 60 residents plus summer homes. Smedsbostäder (smiths' cottages) serve as rentals, while the bygdegården, a converted smiths' home, hosts community events like midsummer celebrations, flea markets, and Christmas markets organized by the village association. The manor house café operates summers and sporadically year-round.

Nature's Embrace

Nestled between lakes, Korså offers pristine forests teeming with wildlife—moose, beaver, even bear sightings. Fishing in accessible lakes (some handicap-adapted) requires permits. Part of Järnets väg (Iron Road) linking to Falu Gruva UNESCO site, it invites self-guided exploration of woods, waters, and trails. Summers bring steamboat history echoes on Hyen from 1867.
