Kata Farm stands as the remnants of a grand Viking Age estate in Varnhem, Västra Götaland. Burials began here as early as the 10th century, defying prior beliefs that Christianity arrived in Sweden only around 1000 AD with King Olof Skötkonung's baptism.The 4,000-square-meter cemetery segregated the elite near the church in limestone or wooden coffins, while servants lay farther out. Bodies faced east per Christian custom, with men south and women north, including the grave of Kata herself under a runestone slab.

The estate's name honors Kata, a formidable woman who governed in the early 11th century. Her exceptionally preserved skeleton, protected by the limestone runestone, reveals a life of status. Runes on the slab proclaim her authority, while nearby finds like greyhound remains hint at exotic luxuries imported from distant lands.Excavations from 2005 to 2017 uncovered these treasures, proving Varnhem Christianized a century ahead of the national narrative. Kata's era bridged pagan traditions and emerging faith, with her farm as a nexus of change.

In 2017, a striking information building opened above the ruins, blending sleek contemporary design with millennium-old walls. Its glass floor allows glimpses into the crypt and graves, including Kata's. Scale models reconstruct the original wooden and stone churches, immersing visitors in lost architectures.The permanent exhibition, "Christian Vikings in Varnhem," narrates the site's saga: faith's arrival, westward voyages, and daily farm life. This open-air hall shields delicate remains from weather, earning architectural acclaim.

Kata's successors, including Mistress Sigrid of the House of Stenkil, donated the estate to establish Varnhem's Cistercian monastery in the 12th century. The old church served monks for storage before demolition, its stones repurposed. Today, Kata Farm complements the nearby abbey, weaving personal stories into Sweden's medieval tapestry.
