Enhet 1 & 2 is a two-piece sculptural work carved from hallandsgnejs (Halland gneiss), a locally sourced hard rock whose striated textures and flecks give the forms a quietly mineral character. The artist arranges the two monoliths as companions: one face bears a darker, wet-polished skin while the other is left lighter and toothier, the contrast between surfaces becoming the piece’s primary language. Together the blocks read as a single idea made visible through differing finishes.

The sculpture sits at Hamngatan in Falkenberg’s older waterfront quarter, where the experience of the work is inseparable from its urban and maritime backdrop. Nearby brick warehouses, cobbled surfaces and the proximity of the river channel set a small-scale, tactile stage: gulls, ferrying light and the occasional ripple from the water amplify the stone’s textures and the site’s modest drama.

Approach the pair on foot and you’ll notice how the darker polished face captures reflections and makes seasons legible — wet slate in drizzle, glinting bronze in low sun — while the paler face reads more matte and tactile. The careful polishing invites touch: fingers trace seams, palms feel temperature differences, and the rock’s cool weight and mineral scent under damp air register as part of a low-key civic ritual.

Enhet 1 & 2 belongs to a wider programme of public works placed around Falkenberg to mark civic spaces and histories. In this neighbourhood, sculptural pieces sit beside municipal buildings and harbour infrastructure, creating a small constellation of art that links everyday movement with moments of quiet attention.

The pair reads well from a short distance: close enough to appreciate tool marks and finish, yet set far enough apart to be read as a composed pair. Light changes throughout the day; late afternoon brings warmer tones to the stone while overcast conditions emphasise the contrast between the wet-polished and dry surfaces.

While modest in scale, Enhet 1 & 2 functions as a local landmark in the old-town quayside. It compresses geological, material and sculptural thinking into two forms that punctuate a pedestrian route, offering residents and visitors a tactile counterpoint to the surrounding built fabric.
