Origins on the Family Farm

Johan Edvard Hyltén founded his metalworks in 1874 on his father's farm Hyltan, starting with a modest smithy and foundry. He crafted everyday items like harness bows, paraffin lamps, and the iconic Småland purse, earning silver and bronze medals at the 1897 Stockholm Exhibition for superior metalwork. Early adoption of electricity powered the machinery, marking a forward-thinking approach in rural Småland.The arrival of the railway past Gnosjö in 1902 turbocharged operations, enabling expansion and distribution of finely wrought goods.

Rebirth After the Flames

A devastating fire in 1914 razed the original site, prompting a complete rebuild at Gåröström along Anderstorpsvägen. Johan Edvard's son John, trained in a Stockholm drawing office, designed the new plant, while brother Paul handled administration after commercial schooling. These sturdy buildings, erected during or post-World War I, embody the era's industrial resilience.All structures northwest of the road hold great cultural historic value, protected as testament to Gnosjö's manufacturing prowess.

Peak Production and Wartime Ingenuity

Pre-World War II, Hylténs thrived producing boat fittings and fire-fighting gear, peaking at 42 employees. Belt-driven lathes, presses, and forges hummed with activity, turning out clock components, ship bells, school clocks, and ornate knobs polished to shine.The factory's waterside location harnessed Gåröström's flow, a detail Johan Edvard engineered for power, blending nature with nascent industry.

A Frozen Industrial Legacy

Closing in 1974 after a century, the site remained untouched, preserving an environment akin to the early 1900s. Machinery largely predates 1930, offering a vivid snapshot of Gnosjö's metalworking tradition and the famed Gnosjöandan—local ingenuity and industriousness.Designated Industrial Heritage Site of the Year in 2005 by the Swedish Industrial Heritage Association, it symbolizes Småland's enduring manufacturing ethos.
